"It's our year";

"It's going to be a success".

It is the general tone at the starting signal of the International Tourism Fair.

The post-pandemic Fitur

comes at a hopeful moment for the sector.

After two hard years of restrictions on activity, hotels, airlines and official organizations aspire to break all records in 2023 thanks to accumulated demand and despite the bad omens due to the geopolitical and macroeconomic conditions that lurk on the national and international scene.

The

Kings Don Felipe and Doña Letizia

have inaugurated this Wednesday the 43rd edition of Fitur, which is held at Ifema Madrid until next Sunday, in a context of practical recovery of the pre-pandemic figures in the sector.

They have done so accompanied at all times by the President of the Congress,

Meritxell Batet

, the President of the Community of Madrid,

Isabel Díaz Ayuso,

the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism,

Reyes Maroto,

and the Mayor of Madrid,

José Luis Martínez- Almeida.

The fair is attended by 8,500 participating companies, 755 exhibitors, 131 countries and 90 international official representations.

All of them distributed in the 66,900 square meters of the eight Ifema pavilions (from 3 to 10, specifically) to present the latest developments in the national and international tourism sector.

The showcase could not be more attractive.

"It is time to

show muscle

after the hard years that the sector has experienced and this is the best place," they explain from the organization.

The atmosphere of optimism is breathed in all the pavilions.

Although the shadow of the inflationary crisis looms over the talks at the stands, the sector's prospects for 2023 are more than favourable, after staying last year on the verge of recovering the activity levels of 2019.

"Expectations for 2023 are extraordinary, it will be the best year in the company's history," highlighted the CEO of NH Hotel Group,

Ramón Aragonés,

who has influenced that the EBITDA or gross operating result between April and December 2022, without the omicron effect, was higher than the same period in 2019. "We are in a happy moment, after having had a very bad time," he emphasized during the press conference held at the hotel stand.

"There is no reason for the slightest concern regarding income," he insisted, later emphasizing that the company is at an "exceptional moment."

For his part, the corporate director of Iberia and president of the Tourism Council of the CEOE employers,

Juan Cierco

, has been convinced that the airline will recover pre-pandemic levels in 2023 and has taken advantage of his intervention at the Spanish Hospitality stand, together with the president of the employers' association, Antonio Garamendi, to remember that companies are "to make money" and invest it in "stable and quality jobs, sustainability, innovation..." always guaranteeing financial sustainability.

In this context, Cierco has made an appeal to the Government of Pedro Sánchez, whom it has asked to lead actions in favor of the development of the tourism sector

during the next European presidency

, emphasizing the need to avoid tax increases and promote investments in sustainability.

Although he has recalled that companies have powerful lobbies and sectoral associations, he has insisted that the Executive must take advantage of the opportunity offered by the European presidency to achieve the objectives of the sector.
