A neon sign with the Twitter logo, five espresso machines from the Italian brand La Marzocco and various office furniture: After radical staff cuts, Twitter is now selling various items at its headquarters in San Francisco as part of an online auction.

According to the website of the commissioned auction house Heritage Global Partners, it is "surplus office equipment".

In parallel with the job cuts, Twitter has also reduced the office space used under its new owner Elon Musk in recent months.

According to media reports, several floors at the headquarters in San Francisco were cleared.

Twitter had around 7,500 employees before it was sold to Musk, but it's now down to around 2,000. Musk has said he's "trying like crazy" to cut costs.

At the same time, he is looking for new sources of income, for example, in addition to advertising, he wants to generate more sales with fee-based subscriptions.

The auction of office equipment, which started on Tuesday and was due to run until Wednesday, is now bringing additional money to Twitter, which of course shouldn't carry too much weight overall.

Ross Dove, CEO of Heritage Global Partners, told the New York Times that he expects the auction to fetch $1.5 million for Twitter.

But there is obviously a lot of interest.

Ross said more than 20,000 people have registered to bid, an unprecedented number in the auction house's history.

Heritage has auctioned off items belonging to other prominent companies, including the collapsed energy company Enron.

Many of Twitter's 631 auction lots saw brisk bidding, well above their starting prices of $25 or $50.

The bid for the neon sign with the Twitter bird was $22,500 on Wednesday morning, and $11,000 for the largest of the espresso machines.

Twitter does not take care of sending the objects.

The winning bidders must pick up the pieces themselves or hire a designated shipping service.
