This is a historical record since the creation of the state after the Second World War.

Germany recorded an inflation rate of 7.9% for the whole of 2022, the national statistics institute confirmed on Tuesday.

“The historically high annual inflation rate is mainly due to the extreme increases in the prices of energy and food products since the start of the war in Ukraine,” explained the president of the Destatis institute, Ruth Brand, in a press release.

This is much more than in France, for example, where inflation rose by 5.2% on average in 2022. Price increases peaked at 10.4% year-on-year in October (national standards) in within Europe's largest economy.

But it began to slow from November, thanks in particular to the release by Berlin of 200 billion euros to cap prices.

government aid

In December, inflation continued to decline thanks to state aid, reaching 8.6% over one year, Destatis also confirmed on Tuesday.

Over one month, prices fell by 0.8%.

Government aid helped lower gas (-39.1%) and fuel (-8.9%) prices compared to November.

However, electricity (+0.4%) and food (+0.8%) increased slightly.

The rise in the harmonized price index, which serves as a benchmark for the European Central Bank, also fell in December, to 9.6% over one year, confirmed Destatis.
