As chemical fertilizer prices continue to rise due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and other factors, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Nomura met with Canada's Minister of Natural Resources and asked for cooperation toward a stable supply of potassium chloride, a raw material for fertilizers.

On the afternoon of the 17th, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Nomura met with Canadian Minister of Natural Resources Wilkinson, who is visiting Japan.

Canada is a major producer, accounting for about 40% of the reserves of potassium chloride, a raw material for chemical fertilizers, and Japan currently imports most of it from Canada.

Based on this situation, Minister Nomura said, "I am grateful that Japan has no raw materials for chemical fertilizers, but we are working as a major supplier of potassium chloride to Japan." I asked for help with the supply.

In response, Minister of Natural Resources Wilkinson said, "Japan and Canada share the same values and have enjoyed a long-standing friendly relationship. I have great expectations for even closer cooperation between the two countries in the future." showed understanding.

Russia and Belarus are also major producers of potassium chloride, but since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, economic sanctions have made it virtually impossible for Japan to import potassium chloride from these countries.

Since this has led to soaring prices of chemical fertilizers, Japan plans to continue to work with Canada to ensure a stable supply.
