Emirates Global Aluminium, the largest industrial company in the UAE outside the oil and gas sector, announced yesterday the launch of the “Aluminum Recycling Alliance”, which aims to bring about a gradual change in aluminum recycling operations in the Emirates.

The alliance includes companies: «Emirates Global Aluminum», «Abu Dhabi Waste Management» - Tadweer, «Aujan Coca-Cola Beverages», «Coca-Cola National Beverages», «Environment Cleaning», «Dubai Refreshments», «Canpac», «Crown Bevcan Europe and the Middle East». Africa, Dulsco Group, Veolia.

Alliance goals

The Aluminum Recycling Alliance aims to promote recycling by consumers in the UAE, especially the recycling of beverage containers, and increase collection rates by encouraging individuals to follow a lifestyle that promotes sustainability, and placing these containers in designated containers.

In its first initiative, the Alliance intends to support a study to be conducted by the International Aluminum Institute on aluminum recycling rates and behaviors in the UAE, in order to fully identify the size of the available opportunities and potential solutions.

The International Aluminum Institute is the global trade association for the aluminum industry, and conducts similar studies around the world.

The Alliance also expects to provide support to the UAE government on the necessary regulations and policies on aluminum recycling, and to cooperate to further develop the infrastructure to advance aluminum recycling.

The Minister of Economy, Abdullah bin Touq Al-Marri, said that the "Aluminum Recycling Alliance", led by Emirates Global Aluminum, will enhance the UAE's position as a global leading center supporting international efforts in the field of green development, as well as supporting the goals of its policy on the circular economy by 2031, and contribute In building a more flexible and competitive knowledge economy.

For her part, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, Maryam bint Muhammad Saeed Hareb Al Muhairi, said: “The demand for aluminum is expected to grow around the world by between 50 and 80% by 2050, due to the main role of this metal that can be recycled without limits in achieving zero emissions.”

She added, "Cooperation along the value chain, such as the Aluminum Recycling Alliance, will accelerate the decarbonization of our economy in line with the national strategy to achieve climate neutrality by 2050."

EGA is the first company in the Middle East to join the Aluminum Stewardship Initiative, which is concerned with setting standards for sustainability performance in the aluminum industry.

Last year, it announced a project to build the largest aluminum recycling facility in the UAE.

In the same context, the CEO of Emirates Global Aluminium, Abdel Nasser Ibrahim Saif bin Kalban, expressed his hope to reduce the rate of waste of this precious metal, and to increase recycling rates in the UAE for the benefit of society, and in line with the UAE's policy in this field.
