The International Air Transport Association (IATA) confirmed that UAE airports, especially in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, provide travelers with the possibility of moving through airport operations, such as boarding the plane without presenting paper documents.

He added to "Emirates Today" that many airlines in the UAE, the region and the world are working with "IATA" within the framework of a new initiative, "One ID", to digitalize the experience of passengers at airports through operations that rely on contactless biometric measurements.

He stressed that digitizing the procedures will enable travelers to submit documents accepting their travel to a specific international destination in digital form, and save the time it takes to stand in front of the check-in desks or the boarding gate, to verify the authenticity of the documents.

In detail, Kamel Al-Awadi, Regional Vice President of the International Air Transport Association for Africa and the Middle East, said,

Many UAE airports, especially Dubai and Abu Dhabi airports, provide travelers with the possibility of moving through airport operations, such as boarding the plane without presenting paper documents, given that the boarding pass “Boarding” is linked to a “biometric identifier” that depends on the person’s vital or biological measurements. Pointing out that the UAE is one of the leading destinations in implementing such measures.

Al-Awadi added to "Emirates Today" that many airlines in the UAE, the region and the world are working with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) within the framework of a new initiative, "One ID", to digitalize the experience of passengers at airports, and through operations that adopt on contactless biometrics.

He explained that IATA is working on developing a set of standards to support this trend in the sector, with the aim of accelerating the reduction of the time it takes to complete the required travel procedures, from the moment passengers arrive at the airport until they board the plane.

He stated that this new recommended practice regarding the digitization of procedures will enable travelers to submit documents accepting their travel to a specific international destination in digital form, and save the time it takes to stand in front of the check-in desks, or the boarding gate, to verify the authenticity of the documents.

digital identity

Al-Awadi confirmed that this initiative works to facilitate the long-term travel experience, as travelers in the future will be able to create a “authenticated digital identity” through the smart application of the airlines they use to travel, and travelers will be able through their digital identity to send the required documents in advance to The concerned authorities at the destination they wish to travel to, and receive a digital copy of the “travel approval document”, through the application of the digital identity / digital passport, which the traveler uses, in addition to sharing the required documents that have been verified (not all of their data), with The airline, followed by receiving a “confirmation” from the airline that all procedures and documents are correct, and that the traveler can go to the airport.

Al-Awadi pointed out that travelers want to use technology to make their travel experience smoother and easier, and therefore enabling them to prove "approval" of their travel to a specific destination, before their arrival at the airport, achieves a great achievement in this regard.

Share information

Al-Awadi revealed that a recent survey conducted by IATA on the opinions of international travelers shows that 83% of travelers are willing to share their travel and immigration information, so that their request is processed quickly, indicating that the new system will be a good incentive for airlines and governments through improved data quality. Requirements for providing resources, and identifying the reasons that may delay the procedures for approval of travel, before the arrival of travelers at the airport.

Paper documents

He continued: «Although programs are currently being used in many airports that allow travelers to navigate through a number of processes and procedures applied in airports without the need to submit paper documents, in many cases travelers are still required to present travel approval documents at the registration desk. Arrival, or at the boarding gates, such as passports, visas, health certificates, and others, to ensure their physical authenticity.

Al-Awadi expressed his confidence that the coming years will witness an increase in the number of airports where travelers can use contactless biometric techniques, without the need to submit paper documents for physical verification.

He pointed out that the region benefited, in the aftermath of the "Covid-19" pandemic, from rerouting flight routes, as a result of global geopolitical conditions, and most importantly, the return of demand after the end of the state of reluctance to travel, which focused on the extensive global travel networks available in the region, in conjunction with the start of restoring Global travel markets are recovering.
