So that there are no misunderstandings: the protection of minors is correct and important.

And it's important that ZDF doesn't make content from its media library readily available to young people.

What is not correct, however, is how the station, which is financed by fee payers, proceeds technically.

A succinct “Unfortunately not all TV sets (meaning many devices that are more than 6 years old) support this type of encryption” falls short.

ZDF is quick to pillory companies that are not sustainable.

That is why the broadcaster must be measured with the same criteria.

There must be alternatives to encouraging viewers to discard their televisions that probably would have worked for a few more years.

The problem cannot be that the fee-financed institutions lack data: At the end of the year, the contribution service from ARD, ZDF and Deutschlandradio again received selected data from the registration offices on all adult citizens and compared this with its inventory data to clarify the obligation to pay broadcasting fees.
