The significantly increased subscription costs of the streaming provider DAZN have brought consumer advocates onto the scene.

As the Federal Association of Consumers (Vzbv) announced on Tuesday in Berlin, the latest price increases at DAZN are considered illegal due to the lack of approval from existing customers.

The association calls on those affected to join a model declaratory action.

If a procedure were successful, customers could reclaim the overpaid fees from the Internet sports broadcaster.

"The juicy price increases at DAZN are not only annoying for sports fans," said Sebastian Reiling, speaker in the Vzbv model declaratory action team.

"In the opinion of the Vzbv, the price increase clause in the contracts was opaque and therefore ineffective." The streaming provider had increased its prices in August 2022 from 14.99 euros to 29.99 euros per month.

With a one-time payment, the annual costs increased from EUR 149.99 to EUR 274.99.

DAZN had already received a letter from consumer advocates in May 2022.

Legal advice was obtained from a leading international law firm.

The issues are complex and technical.

"DAZN remains convinced that its terms and conditions are in line with applicable law."
