At least the job market is still reliable.

In a year that was marked by war and crises, the number of people in employment climbed to a record: 45.6 million people were in work in Germany in 2022 on average - more than at any time since reunification.

Despite all the legitimate joy about this good news, one should keep in mind that things will not go on like this.

In the short term, the recession expected for the winter will ensure that the situation on the labor market will deteriorate.

In the medium term, there is an even greater problem: millions of workers will be lost from the labor market in the coming years due to the impending retirement of the baby boomers.

But although this was foreseeable for a long time, politicians failed to act decisively - and with the "Retirement at 63" even signaled that Germany could afford valuable workers to retire early.

Now it's time to take countermeasures.

The expected reform of the immigration of skilled workers is an important first step.
