As the New Year's Day and the Spring Festival approach, silkworm chrysalis, a "hard dish" for family reunion banquets in Northeast China, are starting to sell well.

Behind the booming industrial chain, a group of post-95s and post-00s young people from small villages have become witnesses to promote rural revitalization and expand local employment channels.

As the two festivals approach, data from a large retail platform shows that in the first three weeks of December this year alone, the sales of silkworm chrysalis in the three northeastern provinces increased by 51% compared with the same period in November.

Consumers in Harbin, Shenyang, Dalian, Qingdao, Jinan, Tieling, Suihua, Mudanjiang, Fushun, Weifang and other places prefer to buy silkworm chrysalis.

In Xifeng County, Tieling City, Liaoning Province, the tussah industry can create jobs for 30,000 people every year.

Chiyue, a post-95 girl who graduated from university, returned to her hometown to start a business selling silkworm chrysalis online, and can sell more than 150 tons of silkworm chrysalis in one season.

She mobilized nearly 200 farmers in the county to "Karma (northeast dialect, meaning to cut open with a knife) silkworm chrysalis". New professions such as "teacher" came into being.

Rural women find new jobs and earn 20,000 yuan in 3 months

In recent years, Liaoning Province has comprehensively promoted rural revitalization.

With the continuous improvement of rural infrastructure and the continuous improvement of the rural entrepreneurial environment, more retired soldiers and college students have entered the countryside to start businesses.

At present, there are 438,400 people in Liaoning Province who have returned to their hometowns to start businesses.

They are looking for new opportunities on the vast rural land, innovatively integrating local characteristic industries with community e-commerce sales links, creating more employment and income-increasing jobs in rural areas, and injecting new momentum into the development of rural industries with new thinking and ideas of young people .

Chi Yue grew up in Xifeng County, Tieling City, known as the "Hometown of Tussah Silkworms".

There are 450,000 mu of silkworm farms in the local area, where 4,500 tussah silkworms are stocked in total, and the cocoon production is 4,500 tons.

After the silkworm chrysalis matures, it needs to be "karma" out of the cocoon shell manually. She joked that this kind of work is called "karma chrysalis".

In order to broaden the market and help farmers increase their income, in 2021, Chiyue will cooperate with Meituan Optimal to promote the export of silkworm chrysalis from Xifeng County and sell them to many places in the three northeastern provinces.

The surge in online sales has driven more farmers to become "Karpas", most of whom are rural women.

At 7 a.m. on December 23, Wang Min, a 48-year-old villager from Ningyuantun, Xifeng County, came to the workshop to start his day as a "Karpa".

She deftly cut open the upper edge of the silkworm cocoon with a rotary knife, and pulled a silkworm chrysalis out of the cocoon shell.

Silkworm chrysalis are charged by catty. Wang Min cuts one silkworm chrysalis every 1.5 seconds on average, and 6,000 silkworm chrysalis per day, with a daily increase of more than 200 yuan.

Three months before the Spring Festival, Wang Min was able to earn an extra 20,000 yuan.

"Silkworm chrysalis in my village are selling well online, and orders come one after another. As the Spring Festival approaches, everyone is busy with silkworm chrysalis, and everyone can make a lot of money." Wang Min is happy to bloom.

The community e-commerce has moved the small village in northern Liaoning, which is quiet in winter, and the indoors of Kapu are full of joy.

The villagers compare each other to see who has more and better performance, and the "report card" of pupae is posted on the wall for display.

Some rural women who deal with silkworm chrysalis all the year round don't have to go south to work in winter.

Ms. Li Shujing, a 51-year-old villager in Ningyuan Village, grows hazelnuts and corn in spring, summer and autumn. After the autumn harvest, Ms. Li uses silkworm chrysalis to increase her income at home and take care of the elderly and children.

New occupations such as "silkworm chrysalis temperature controller" and "silkworm chrysalis quality inspector" have emerged

Rural revitalization needs the help of young people.

With the vigorous development of the silkworm chrysalis industry in Xifeng County, more new occupations have emerged, attracting rural young people born in the 95s and 00s to participate.

Yang Yuhui, a post-00 girl from Ningyuan Village in Xifeng County, is a "silkworm chrysalis temperature controller".

In the "warming cocoon" session in October, and during the overwintering process of silkworm cocoons in December, Yang Yuhui accurately controlled the temperature and humidity, and was responsible for the color of silkworm chrysalis skin and the survival rate of overwintering.

Every October is the critical "warming cocoon" season for silkworm chrysalis.

Yang Yuhui recalled that her parents discovered that the skin of silkworm chrysalis heated by sunlight would turn red, and red-skinned silkworm chrysalis could emerge.

The price of red-skinned silkworm chrysalis is usually 30% higher than that of black-skinned silkworm chrysalis, which can bring greater benefits to villagers.

In order to breed red silkworm chrysalis, every household in Ningyuan Village started an "experiment", and there was a lot of loss in the initial stage.

When the temperature is lower than 26 degrees Celsius, the skin of the silkworm chrysalis is not red.

When the temperature is slightly higher by one or two degrees Celsius, the silkworm chrysalis will swell and burst.

After many attempts, the villagers found that when the temperature was constant at 27°C to 28°C and the humidity index was 23%, 8 of the silkworm chrysalis came out with red skin.

Constant temperature and humidity need technological means to support.

Chi Yue and other young people are quick-witted. Based on the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs' subsidy project for the primary processing of agricultural products, she and the villagers built an "assembled silkworm chrysalis refrigerator", each warehouse can hold 50 tons of silkworm chrysalis.

The silkworm chrysalis is heated by professional intelligent equipment such as air-cooled condensers and digital display thermometers, and the intelligent temperature and humidity control of its overwintering environment is carried out, and then the "silkworm chrysalis temperature controller" regularly checks.

Yang Yuhui said that through the "warming cocoon" process, not only can you get red-skinned silkworm chrysalis with a higher price, but you can also sterilize and eliminate diseased silkworms.

Heating can also harden the shell of silkworm chrysalis, making it more suitable for long-distance transportation, laying the foundation for future sales to other provinces through Meituan Optimal.

In December, the delicate silkworm chrysalis begins to "overwinter".

Yang Yuhui regularly checks and records the temperature and humidity inside the warehouse every day.

When the room temperature is lower than zero degrees Celsius, the silkworm chrysalis will freeze to death; when the room temperature is higher than 5 degrees Celsius, the silkworm chrysalis will start to hatch into moths again.

Yang Yuhui recalled that in the past few years, his parents had to guard the silkworm chrysalis warehouse without sleep during the winter.

When the temperature is low, burn the stove to heat up, and when the temperature is high, open the windows to ventilate, or spray some water on the silkworm chrysalis to cool down.

Now with the escort of the "assembled silkworm chrysalis refrigerator" and "silkworm chrysalis temperature controller", the small silkworm chrysalis can safely survive the severe winter of minus 20 degrees Celsius in northern Liaoning.

Silkworm chrysalis have to go through quality inspection, sub-packaging and other links before boarding consumers' tables.

Yang Liu, a girl from Ningyuan Village born in the 90s, is a "silkworm chrysalis quality inspector".

Before the silkworm chrysalis is sent to Meituan’s preferred warehouse, she will pick up the silkworm chrysalis box by box to check whether the air chamber of the silkworm chrysalis is white, which means that the silkworm chrysalis is fresh and alive.

In addition, silkworm chrysalis in small packages of 200 grams are sold better on the Meituan Optimal platform.

Villagers in Ningyuantun also earn thousands of yuan a month by working as "silkworm chrysalis packers", packing and weighing baskets of silkworm chrysalis.

Delicious "hard vegetables" in the banquet, fulfilling silkworm farmers' dream of getting rich

The tussah industry has generated more local job opportunities.

Li Shuying, a researcher at the Liaoning Academy of Sericulture Sciences, said, "Liaoning's tussah cocoon production is about 50,000 tons per year, accounting for 60% of the national output. Tussah has become a characteristic agricultural industry in Liaoning. There are nearly 7 million mu of tussah forests in the province, and nearly 200,000 people Employment." More young people like Chi Yue return to the countryside, driving the innovation of local characteristic industries and boosting rural revitalization.

Through Meituan Optimal, a catty of silkworm chrysalis can be sold for 30 yuan, and a season of silkworm chrysalis can sell more than 150 tons of silkworm chrysalis.

The stable and reliable production and sales links have brought a great sense of security to the villagers of Ningyuantun.

At present, more than 80% of the silkworm chrysalis sold by Chiyue are sold through Meituan Best, with annual sales of more than 9 million yuan.

Chi Yue found that online sales of silkworm chrysalis increased every Friday and Saturday, because people in Northeast China like family dinners on weekends.

Based on the convenience and stable supply of Meituan's preferred "Morrowda Supermarket", consumers place orders on Friday and pick up the goods on Saturday.

Silkworm chrysalis has become a delicious "hard dish" in the reunion banquet of Northeast people, and it has also fulfilled the dream of becoming rich for silkworm farmers in Xifeng County.
