It has been revealed that the engineer who killed a Korea Railroad Corporation employee in an accident while driving a freight train at Obong Station in Uiwang-si, Gyeonggi-do, was looking at his mobile phone while driving.

According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Railroad Special Judicial Police is investigating engineer A and B on charges of manslaughter on the job.

On the 5th of last month, at around 8:20 pm, a Korail employee (33) was killed by a freight train while connecting and disconnecting bulk freight cars for cement transportation at Obong Station.

In the process of investigating the cause of the accident, it was revealed that the trainee driver was driving the freight train, and the senior engineer responsible for supervising and instructing the train was looking at his mobile phone.

It is reported that this was captured on CCTV that illuminates the front track.

Currently, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of Employment and Labor are investigating the exact cause of the accident at Obong Station.

The Obong station accident was the fourth major fatal accident on Korail this year.

As the Mugunghwa train derailment occurred at Yeongdeungpo Station right after the fatal accident at Obong Station, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is conducting special inspections on KORAIL and two accidents.

We plan to announce railway safety measures, including the results of special inspections, within the year.
