Aser revealed to «Emirates Today» that they had been subjected to an attempt to steal their banking data, when announcing the sale of used furniture through a famous site, explaining that customers of foreign countries' nationalities directly agree to the offered price without negotiation and do not require seeing the offered pieces.

She added that those scammers only request access to a sent link and fill in banking data such as account number and direct debit or credit card number with the three-digit security code on the back of the card.

According to the messages sent by the fraudsters to these families, this is the only way to receive the price of the sold furniture, but in the event of problems entering the data, they can be contacted via the “WhatsApp” application.

a big role

Commenting, banking expert Awatef Al-Harmoudi said that the customer has a major role to play in protecting himself from such attempts, noting that banks are not responsible for returning any amounts or balances that are withdrawn.

She added to «Emirates Today», that the fraudsters always develop their capabilities in conjunction with all the protection systems that are taken, explaining that in such cases they enter the sites that target their customers and have a great demand, and then copy the “logo” and the name and put it in a link. Fake with very slight differences, such as a letter or a space, for example, so that the customer does not pay attention to it and thus falls victim to the theft of his bank accounts.

She pointed out that one of the most dangerous things that the customer does is write the password for his account or the security code on the cards, or enter a password that is sent to him, indicating that this means his full agreement to view all the accurate details of the account, as well as the possibility of withdrawal.

responsible

Al-Harmoudi stressed that the responsibility for verifying the link and the validity and seriousness of addresses rests with the customer himself, stressing that banks do not pay any compensation or insurance to cover these errors.

She mentioned that banks carry out continuous awareness campaigns, and the customer is supposed to follow them up and report any new attempts to hack.

And she indicated that it is not required that the fraudster reside in the Emirates even if he has a local phone number, so attention and vigilance must be taken to combat all types of fraud that target the UAE in a larger proportion because it is an open country, its economy is strong, and it has a global reputation as an important financial center for trade and money movement.

consumer protection

It is noteworthy that the Central Bank said, in the consumer protection system, that banks and financial institutions are responsible for bearing compensation for the direct costs incurred by the consumer as a result of the breach of his data, unless it is proven that the losses occurred due to gross negligence or fraudulent behavior on the part of consumers.

The Central Bank obligated banks, according to the same system, to exert all due care to protect customer accounts and data by applying the latest technologies related to information security. However, the customer himself must pay attention to misleading messages and links used by fraudsters, and not respond to or respond to their messages.
