To support the production of «Aluminium Celestial» made using solar energy

"Global Aluminum" completes the purchase of clean energy certificates from "Emirates Water and Electricity"

"Noor Abu Dhabi Station" includes 3.2 million solar panels that generate about 1 gigawatt of electricity.

Emirates Global Aluminium, the largest industrial company in the UAE outside the oil and gas sector, announced the purchase of clean energy certificates for 1.1 million megawatt-hours of electricity provided by the Emirates Water and Electricity Company, to support the production of “celestial aluminum” made with solar energy.

These certificates follow the use of solar energy produced by the “Noor Abu Dhabi Plant”, which is one of the largest independent solar power plants in the world, located in the Sweihan region of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and includes 3.2 million solar panels that generate about 1 gigawatt of electricity.

purchase transaction

Yesterday's statement stated that this deal represents the largest purchase of clean energy certificates that track the use of solar energy in Abu Dhabi so far, explaining that these certificates will certify EGA's production of about 80,000 tons of Celestial Aluminum.

The statement pointed out that the company's annual production of "celestial aluminum" depends on imports of solar energy from the electricity grid.

The Emirates Global Aluminum statement stated that about 60% of greenhouse gas emissions in the global aluminum industry process result from electricity generation only, pointing out that Emirates Global Aluminum's use of solar energy significantly reduces these emissions, in line with With the national strategy to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.

new source

Abdul Nasser bin Kalban, CEO of Emirates Global Aluminium, said: "This agreement provides EGA with a new source of solar energy approved for the production of (celestial aluminum)."

He added, “I would like to thank the Emirates Water and Electricity Company for their partnership with us and their leadership in developing solar energy generation operations in Abu Dhabi, as (celestial aluminum) and other low-carbon minerals are the basis for building a sustainable future for our company and our world, and it was launched last year.” A turning point in the history of the company and the entire aluminum sector.

ambitious plan

For his part, CEO of the Emirates Water and Electricity Company, Othman Al Ali, said that the company seeks to implement an ambitious plan to transform energy production, and to develop exceptional solar energy generation capabilities, to support current and future partners.

He added, "We look forward to continuing our cooperation with (Emirates Global Aluminum) to play a major role in achieving the economic and sustainability agenda for the UAE," pointing out that clean energy certificates link the demand for renewable energy sources with supply.

 Clean energy certificates

Clean Energy Certificates are issued by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy and conform to I-RECs standards and best practices.

The Emirates Water and Electricity Company is one of the main parties that enables the implementation of the Clean Energy Certification Program and manages auctions for the sale of solar and nuclear energy certificates generated in Abu Dhabi.

Clean energy certificates are the only approved way in Abu Dhabi to prove the environmental and economic benefits achieved by companies using renewable and clean energy.

And in 2021, Emirates Global Aluminum became the first company in the world to produce aluminum using solar energy, through an agreement with Dubai Electricity and Water Authority.

The company produced about 39,000 tons of "celestial aluminum" during the past year.
