Protests broke out at the largest iPhone factory in China on Wednesday.

Videos on the online services Weibo and Twitter showed hundreds of workers taking to the streets in broad daylight at Apple's Foxconn factory in central China's Zhengzhou.

Some demonstrators were blocked by people in hazmat suits and riot police.

A snippet of live video showed dozens of workers standing in front of a police line and a police vehicle with blue lights flashing at night, shouting, "Defend our rights!

Defend our rights!" A worker drags a metal barrier across the ground, plumes of smoke rise above a vehicle, and in the background a voice yells, "They're rushing in! Smoke bombs! Tear gas!"

A photo taken during the day showed the charred remains of a gate that appeared to have burned down during the night.

On Weibo, the keyword "Foxconn riots" was blocked as of Wednesday afternoon (local time).

However, some texts relating to the protests at the Foxconn factory could still be called up.

Foxconn recently noticed a sharp increase in corona infections in its factory in Zhengzhou, which is why the Taiwanese company sealed off the plant.

At the end of October, a number of workers fled the site on foot.

Some of the workers complained about the miserable conditions in the factory, where hundreds of thousands of people work.

The company initially did not respond to a request from the AFP news agency for comment on the unrest.
