King Salman declares public holiday after historic Saudi win over Argentina

The victory of the Saudis against the Argentina of Lionel Messi for their first match of the World Cup (2-1) did not fail to react in the Gulf.

A resounding victory.

After the success of the Green Falcons on the Argentine selection, King Salman of Saudi Arabia decreed the day of Wednesday as not worked.

A measure that was approved on the recommendation of Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman, state media said.

It concerns not only public sector employees, but also those of private companies, reports our regional correspondent,

This public holiday comes in the midst of exams in education.

Events will therefore have to be rescheduled.

Al-Ekhbariya television broadcast photos of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman celebrating the victory of the Green Falcons with several personalities, including the Minister of Energy, Prince Abdelaziz bin Salman.

Saudi Arabia lead Group C

At the final whistle, scenes of jubilation erupted in the streets of the capital, Riyadh, where Saudis danced for joy as motorists waved the national flag from their rolled-down windows.

In this country of around 35 million people, where more than half the population is under 30, football is a popular sport.

On social media, the Saudis expressed their "pride".

A feeling shared by many other Internet users in the Gulf countries.

Some leaders in the region have also praised this performance, like the Emir of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

In the stands, the Emir of Qatar also hoisted the Saudi flag on his shoulders during the match.  

Saudi Arabia, which leads Group C after the draw between Poland and Mexico (0-0), will face Poland on Saturday before completing its first round on November 30 against Mexico.
