Prior to the issuance of banknotes with a new design in the first half of 2024, tests are being conducted to confirm whether ATMs and vending machines can correctly identify banknotes, and preparations are in full swing.

In order to prevent counterfeiting, the government will renew the design of three types of banknotes, the 10,000-yen note, the 5,000-yen note, and the 1,000-yen note, and plans to issue new banknotes in the first half of fiscal 2024.

A test was released to the press at the National Printing Bureau on the 21st to confirm whether this new banknote can be correctly identified by ATMs and vending machines.

The new banknotes will feature the world's first state-of-the-art hologram technology. When the banknote is tilted, the portrait will appear to move three-dimensionally. It is finely changed and has a high-definition pattern.

Twenty-nine manufacturers and others participated in the test, and they had the device read sample tickets of the new banknotes to check for any malfunctions.

Ichimori Shibuya, from the Bank of Japan Ticketing Department, said, "I hope that everyone will love and use the new Bank of Japan notes. We are working hard to prepare for that, so I am looking forward to the day when you receive them. I want you," he said.
