The UAE adopts the “zero” climate neutrality decision for the aviation sector

 The UAE, represented by the General Civil Aviation Authority, has announced the adoption of a climate neutrality decision for the national aviation sector in the country, to be the first aviation sector in the region to adopt a decision to commit to climate neutrality, and the first sector at the state level to achieve an integrated commitment to this direction.



This decision will pave the way for all other relevant sectors to work on developing their own necessary strategy and plans to reach climate neutrality by 2050.



The decision to climate neutrality for the aviation sector was adopted by His Excellency Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the General Civil Aviation Authority;

His Excellency Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, UAE Special Envoy for Climate Change;

and Her Excellency Maryam bint Mohammed Saeed Hareb Al Muhairi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment.



The decision was also approved by the concerned authorities in the aviation sector in the country, which included: the Department of Municipalities and Transport Abu Dhabi, the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, the Department of Civil Aviation - Sharjah, the Department of Civil Aviation - Ras Al Khaimah, the Department of Civil Aviation - Fujairah, Masdar, Abu Dhabi airports, and airports Dubai, Sharjah International Airport, Emirates Airlines, Etihad Airways, Air Arabia and flydubai.



The climate neutrality team for the aviation sector will work in the next stage to develop an integrated methodology and an action plan to start implementing the decision, and to set all related priorities. And his achievements within the agenda and work program for hosting.



His Excellency Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri said: "We are proud of the aviation sector's climate-neutral decision, which is the first in the region, as well as the first sector in the country to announce its commitment to this ambitious goal."



His Excellency added that the decision comes in line with the vision of the wise leadership to put the environmental sustainability agenda and the repercussions of climate change at the top of its priorities, and to confirm the seriousness and commitment of the state to achieve progress in various major economic sectors to reach the ambitious global goal of reducing carbon emissions, and in line with the goals and vision of the state to host "COP 28", which will be a major stop for developing economically innovative solutions to promote climate action.



His Excellency continued, "The aviation sector is a vital and important sector in the world, and the UAE is one of the pioneers in this field. The commitment to climate neutrality proves to the world the seriousness of the sector and its constant endeavor to invest in the best economic solutions that promote growth and environmental sustainability."



For his part, His Excellency Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the Civil Aviation Authority, said: "The adoption of the resolution reflects the state's commitment to implementing its environmental and climate agenda, its support for the global agenda in this regard, its seriousness in reducing carbon dioxide emissions, and the launch of initiatives and strategies in the future to serve the interests of the public. This agenda.



Al Suwaidi pointed out that the decision also confirms the extent of cooperation and partnership between all strategic partners in the aviation sector to work together to maintain the growth of the sector and give an honorable image to the state and its proactive approach in addressing the repercussions of climate change, and the UAE continues to play a leading role in the environmental agenda at the regional level. It

In 2021, the UAE announced its quest to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 - as the first country in the Middle East to announce this type of initiative - and to set a roadmap for an integrated approach to work to achieve sustainable economic development that integrates climate action. It ensures commitment to the goals of the Paris Agreement, and represents a regional and global catalyst and catalyst for raising the ambition of climate action.



In conjunction with the decision, the General Authority of Civil Aviation established a specialized working group aimed at developing a climate-neutral decision for the aviation sector. The team consists of representatives of a number of strategic partners from local governments, airlines, airports, Masdar, and ADNOC.



This decision comes to confirm the sector's commitment to the strategic objectives of the International Civil Aviation Organization "ICAO" to reduce international emissions, and the climate change resolutions recently adopted at the 41st General Assembly of the organization, which was held in October 2022, and also emphasizes the active participation of the UAE in the efforts of society. the international community in the next stage in order to develop future plans and programs that would maintain the sector’s growth in light of its efforts to reduce emissions and adopt a balanced ecological economic system.
