Autumn fishing for sakura shrimp, a specialty product of Suruga Bay, has begun, and at the first auction held in Shizuoka City, the price was 68,000 yen per 15 kg, almost the same price as last year.

The first auction was held on the morning of the 7th at two locations in the prefecture, and on the first day, about 3.2 tons, which was 700 kg less than last fall, was auctioned.

Among these, at Yui Fishing Port in Shizuoka City, brokers surrounded cases containing sakura shrimp and bid down one after another while checking the size and color.

According to the Yui Fisheries Cooperative Association, the average successful bid price was about 68,000 yen for a 15-kilogram case, which was almost the same price as on the first day of last year.

Due to the serious lack of sakura shrimp catches, since 2018, we have been voluntarily trying to recover resources by not catching juvenile shrimp smaller than 35 mm in autumn fishing.

This summer's survey showed that the number of eggs was gradually recovering, and even on the first day's fishing, there were more juvenile shrimp than usual, so I have high hopes for future fishing.

Masanori Jitsuishi, head of the Shizuoka Prefecture Sakura Shrimp Fishery Association, said, "It's rare to get that much fine shrimp at this time of year. I want you to be in a situation where you can eat cheaply at any time."

The autumn fishing period for sakura shrimp is until the 25th of next month.
