China News Agency, Wuhan, November 6 (Reporter Chen Su and Zhang Qin) Tan Guangming, deputy director of China's State Forestry and Grassland Administration, said on the 6th that China will take five new measures to promote the high-quality development of wetland protection.

The 14th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Wetlands (COP14) opened on the 5th, and the conference held a press conference on the 6th to introduce the staged results of the conference.

Tan Guangming said at the press conference that China's wetland area is 56.35 million hectares, ranking first in Asia and fourth in the world. With 4% of the world's wetlands, it bears the main demand for wetlands by one-fifth of the world's population.

The total number of wetland-type nature reserves in China has reached more than 2,200, and 11 million hectares of wetlands are also planned to be incorporated into the national park system to implement the strictest protection management.

On the same day, COP14 adopted the Wuhan Declaration, calling on all parties to promote the protection, restoration, management and rational and sustainable use of various wetlands with strong will and practical actions.

Tan Guangming said that in the next step, China will play a greater role in promoting the high-quality development of global wetland protection with new deployment and new measures in accordance with the "Wetland Convention" and the "Wuhan Declaration".

The first is to promote the construction of wetland-type national parks in a scientific and orderly manner.

Orderly promote the construction of wetland-type national parks such as the Three River Sources and the Yellow River Estuary, and strengthen the protection of the authenticity and integrity of the ecosystem.

Actively build wetland-type nature reserves and natural parks.

Effectively protect the 4 migratory bird flight routes passing through China, and provide a safe and comfortable home for migratory birds.

The second is to scientifically draw a new blueprint for wetland protection and development.

Implement the National Wetland Protection Plan (2022-2030).

By 2025, the overall number of wetlands in the country will be stable, the wetland protection rate will reach 55%, and 20 wetlands of international importance and 50 wetlands of national importance will be added.

By 2030, a high-quality development pattern of wetland protection will be initially established, and wetland ecosystem functions and biodiversity protection will be significantly improved.

The third is to scientifically implement major wetland protection projects.

In the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the Yellow River Basin, the Yangtze River Basin, the Northeast Forest Belt, the Northern Sand Control Belt, the Southern Hilly and Mountainous Belt, and the Coastal Belt, priority is given to the implementation of about 30 key wetland conservation and restoration projects to achieve comprehensive improvement and systematic restoration.

Fourth, scientifically build a legal and institutional system for wetland protection.

Improve the legal system with the "Wetland Protection Law" as the core, formulate and revise provincial-level wetland protection regulations, and "escort" the development of wetland protection.

Give play to the important role of the river and lake chief system and forest chief system, implement the total control system of wetland area, and strengthen the assessment of the target responsibility system.

Formulate management systems such as the Measures for the Management of Wetlands of International Importance and the Measures for the Management of Wetlands of National Importance.

Fifth, scientifically build Shenzhen International Mangrove Center.

Guiding Shenzhen to build the world's first "International Mangrove Center" for exchanges and cooperation in mangrove protection, comprehensively carry out technical exchanges, information sharing, monitoring and evaluation and foreign aid training, and provide services and assistance to all contracting states, especially developing countries.
