In a press statement on the sidelines of the meetings of the General Assembly of the Arab Air Transport Association, hosted by Etihad Airways, Tuffaha said that "the UAE alone accounts for 8% of the total international air traffic and air transport activity globally," noting that the UAE has succeeded in Making the air transport sector one of the main engines that contributed to the country's economic growth.

Tufaha added, "The UAE occupies a major position in the connection between the east, west, north and south, which is an extension of its history, being a point of convergence between people in the world, which represents the essence of the aviation sector."

He pointed out that the air transport sector in the UAE contributed more than 12% to the country's gross domestic product in 2019, before the "Corona" pandemic, explaining that "this percentage is the highest in the world, and is more than double its global average."

He stressed that the air transport sector in the world has begun to emerge from the “Corona” crisis, with travel rates gradually returning to normal, expecting that the sector globally will reach its previous levels before the pandemic, in terms of movement within the next year, instead of 2025 or after.

Tofaha explained that "global rates are still lower in terms of the number of passengers by 17.6%, compared to 2019, and they are less by 8% in the number of jobs, and by 7% in revenue, in addition to being lower by 40% in the number of tourists."

And he indicated that the aviation sector is currently facing crises related to external factors, such as geopolitical conditions and high global inflation, noting that jet fuel prices are currently 50 percent higher than oil prices, although they usually exceed them by 10 percent at most.

Priorities

The Secretary-General of the Arab Air Carriers Association, Abdel Wahab Tofaha, stated that the association identified three priorities to be discussed during its meeting in Abu Dhabi, the first of which is the speed of digital transformation and the adoption of digital identity, including the revival of the International Health Certificate in a digital form, which makes the demand for travel greater, as the Emirates did, This enhances the smoothness of movement and reduces the complications experienced by travelers.

He added that the second priority is to confirm the absorption of the lessons resulting from the “Corona” pandemic, the most important of which is that the closure harmed the sector greatly, and led to the loss of millions of jobs around the world, but it did not prevent the spread of the pandemic, and finally climate change and the achievement of what was committed, which is to reach Zero carbon emissions by 2050, which requires investments in technology development and sustainable fuels from governments.
