The death of 66 children in The Gambia so far after taking Indian cough syrup is putting India's pharmaceutical industry under pressure again.

In recent years, the "pharmacy of the world" has repeatedly been the target of investigations, for example by the American drug agency, which denounced the sometimes hair-raising production conditions, especially for imitation products.

A few years ago, the European Union triggered a trade dispute with India when it blacklisted around 700 Indian imitation products.

India even canceled the next round of trade talks with the EU.
