As companies are required to reduce plastic waste, McDonald's Japan, a major hamburger chain, has decided to replace plastic straws and spoons with paper or wooden ones at all stores.

From the 7th of this month, McDonald's Japan will switch plastic straws provided with products to paper and spoons and forks to wood at approximately 2,900 stores nationwide from the 7th of this month.

It is expected that this measure will reduce plastic consumption by about 900 tons annually.

The company says, "We will continue to actively promote environmentally friendly initiatives."

At the hamburger chain "Mos Food Service", from this month onwards, take-out spoons and forks will be switched to those containing plant-derived biomass plastics at stores nationwide.

In addition, even among major coffee chains, "Tully's Coffee Japan" has opened a hole in the handle and provided a spoon with a reduced amount of plastic, and since August this year, it has been progressing nationwide.

Regarding disposable plastic products, the food service industry is actively working on reducing them, as a law that came into effect in April obliged businesses that provide large amounts of them free of charge to reduce them.
