In order to create a stable semiconductor production system in Japan, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has decided to subsidize up to about 46.5 billion yen for the production facility that American semiconductor giant Micron Technology will establish in Hiroshima Prefecture.

The government has set up a fund of more than 600 billion yen for semiconductors, which are becoming increasingly important from the perspective of economic security, to subsidize the costs of developing cutting-edge semiconductor production facilities.

Regarding this, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry announced on the 30th that Micron Technology and its subsidiary "Micron Memory Japan" will subsidize up to approximately 46.5 billion yen for the new production facility in the factory in Higashihiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture. decided.

At the new facility, among memory semiconductors called "DRAM", mass production of the latest semiconductors used in data centers and AI (artificial intelligence) is planned, and some operations are scheduled to start next spring.

This is the third case that the government will provide support, following Taiwan's TSMC's new factory in Kumamoto Prefecture and Kioxia's production facilities in Mie Prefecture.

At a press conference after the cabinet meeting, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Nishimura said, "We believe that the expansion of production in Japan by one of the largest semiconductor manufacturers in the United States will lead to further strengthening of Japan-U.S. cooperation in the semiconductor field." rice field.
