• Food inflation will be further aggravated by the tax on plastics from 2023

Inflation

has moderated in September to stand at

9

% year-on-year,

which means that

prices are today 9% higher

than those registered in the country a year ago, according to data advanced this Thursday by the Institute National Statistics (INE).

Despite being a very high rise in the Consumer Price Index (CPI),

inflation is slowing down

compared to the year-on-year rates at which it has been in recent months: in

July

the products we consume were

10.8% more expensive

than in the same month last year, and

in August, 10.5%.

The INE has explained that the decrease in the year-on-year rate is mainly due "

to the drop in electricity prices"

, compared to those registered in September 2021. "Although to a lesser extent, the decrease in

fuels

, compared to the rise of the previous year, and the drop in

transport

", they point out.

In

monthly

terms , if we compare the prices of September with those of August,

the CPI fell by 0.6%

, compared to the 0.3% rebound of last month, which implies that the prices of goods and consumption that we have paid in September they have been cheaper than the ones we bought in August.

Precisely monthly inflation is the data that the

Government

is using lately to defend that the price increases are deflating little by little and that

the trend is downward.

However,

the contagion of

price increases to the entire consumer basket remains serious, as reflected in

core inflation,

which excludes the price of fresh food and energy (since they are the most volatile components) and even thus it

rose 6.2% year

-on-year -compared to 6.4% in August-

and 0.2% month-on-month.

The Funcas

panel of economists

, made up of twenty of the most important macroeconomic study and analysis services in the country, had forecast that

the CPI would rise by 9.4% in September,

with which the data advanced this Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics is even more positive.

If this data is confirmed in the middle of the month,

the average inflation

registered so far this year amounts to

9%.
