The Executive Director of the Markets and Consumer Services Sector at the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council, Khalaf Al Mazrouei, revealed that more than 70,000 commodities representing 600 products were withdrawn in Abu Dhabi for violating the applicable standard specifications, during the past 10 years, from 2012 to the end of 2021.

Al Mazrouei said, during a media briefing organized by the council, that this comes to ensure the quality of the products traded in the market and to protect consumers from any harmful products, explaining that the most prominent recalled products varied between electrical appliances, food products, children's toys and cosmetics.

He explained that Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity gives the trademark owner or supplier the freedom to choose one of the two options in case the product is withdrawn, either destroying the product through product recycling centers in the country, or sending the product back to the country of origin.

Al Mazrouei stated that correction and modification operations were carried out for more than 87,000 commodities, representing 200 non-conforming products during the past 10 years. Correction, whether inside or outside the country, then the product is re-examined again through various laboratories to verify the performance of all its functions with high quality after correction operations.

Al Mazrouei confirmed that the council has extended its oversight role to include platforms, websites and social media to verify that no brand owner or supplier has offered their products for sale on platforms and social media in the event the council decides to withdraw it or make a correction or modification to it.

He pointed out that more than 2,100 reports of the safety of products received from consumers on communication sites were examined, whose role has increased and grown after the “Corona” pandemic.

And he indicated that the council is also verifying the correctness and accuracy of the readings of the legal measurement tools used in trade exchange that affect human health, as more than 85,000 verification operations were conducted, which showed an increase in the percentage of conformity in them from 81% in 2012 to 99% in 2021 .

Inspection of 670 thousand goods

The Executive Director of the Markets and Consumer Services Sector at the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council, Khalaf Al Mazrouei, said that the council has inspected more than 670,000 commodities during the past 10 years.

He added that the percentage of conformity with its specifications increased from 38% in 2012 to 85% in 2021, and the conformity of more than 2,500 restricted products that are traded under certain conditions was verified, in addition to the inspection of more than 2,000 products that obtained certification. Conformity certificates from the Council and verification of the safety of 6000 cosmetics products during the same period.
