Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which drove up the prices of oil and other commodities, the price of gasoline has become a hot topic in the world.

As taxes represent the major part of the price of fuel (about 60% in France), it is the countries that tax gasoline the least that continue to post the lowest prices, like the United States: with an average price of 1.04 euros per liter for Unleaded 95, Americans still pay much less than people in many countries to fill up.

Globally, the average was around 1.31 euros per liter as of September 12, 2022.

The "old continent" at the top of a sad podium

Europe has some of the highest gasoline prices on the planet.

Most Europeans pay €1.50 or more per liter and the €2 threshold has even been crossed in some countries (Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, Finland).

In France, the average weekly price was 1.50 euros on September 12.

Norway is an exception among oil-producing countries, as it applies a particularly high fuel tax.

The country bases a large part of its wealth on hydrocarbons, but has for many years pursued a policy aimed at no longer depending on fossil fuels.

Nearly 3 euros per liter in Hong Kong against 2 cents in Caracas

But the most expensive liter of gasoline in the world is sold in Hong Kong: 2.93 euros, which amounts to more than 100 euros to fill up a small car!

Other oil-producing countries have chosen the opposite path and offer gasoline at a lower price than bottled water.

The most radical examples are Venezuela, Libya and Iran, where a liter costs between 2 and 5 euro cents.

Our "GASOLINE PRICES" file

Among the regions of the world where gasoline is the cheapest are North Africa and the Middle East, but also Central Asia.

In Algeria, for example, Sans-Plomb 95 costs only around 30 cents per litre, while in Kazakhstan the price is currently just over 40 cents.
