Starting in early 2023... Oman bans the import of plastic bags

The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion issued a ministerial decision banning the import of plastic bags, and it is effective on January 1, 2023.

Engineer Sami bin Salem Al Sahib, Director General of Industry at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, explained that the decision to ban the import of plastic bags comes within the ministry's plans to regulate the market with regard to importing materials and goods that harm the Omani environment, and it is part of the comprehensive plan agreed by the ministry with the Environment Agency.

He added that the decision will support Omani factories by limiting unfair competition from imported products that do not meet environmental standards, noting that the ministry is seeking, through its cooperation with the Environment Agency, to move from the current plastic industries to environmentally friendly industries in the future.

Engineer Sami Al-Sahib stressed that the decision will not affect the local plastic bag factories, but will help them increase their production capacity to cover the local market and will contribute to supporting the increase in sales of local factories specialized in plastic industries.

The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion seeks, through the implementation of the decision to ban the import of plastic bags, to preserve the Omani environment from pollution and waste harmful to the environment and the wildlife that abounds in the Sultanate of Oman.

She stressed that eliminating plastic bags is one of the challenges that the Ministry of Trade and Industry and Investment Promotion seeks to achieve in cooperation with the relevant authorities, and to find specifications and guidelines for manufacturers and suppliers to ensure the correct transition to alternatives to plastic bags thanks to the level of collective awareness of the negative effects of using plastic bags on human health and the environment. .
