If the summer season rhymes with holidays, it is also that of removals: each year, in France and between the months of June and September, 1.5 million households change their residence!

However, depending on the distance to be covered and the volume of goods to be transported, a move costs from 600 to 2500 €, which is not negligible.

Fortunately, a few tricks can help you lower the score...

Get rid of the superfluous

Moving is often a good opportunity to sort through your belongings.

Rather than cluttering up unnecessarily, resell the clothes, but also the furniture and decorative items you no longer want!

Not only will you be able to reduce your costs by renting a smaller truck, but you will also be able to make some welcome profits.

Once in your new home, if you are missing something, you can always hunt for furniture in a flea market or on resale sites between individuals.

Find free boxes

Admittedly, the boxes do not represent the most important part of your moving budget, but there are no small savings!

So reuse your own boxes, crates and other large shopping bags to carry your stuff.

If you have received parcels following an order, keep the boxes which will be perfect for transporting small heavy objects, such as books.

Finally, ask to pick up boxes from merchants and supermarkets in your area.

On the packaging side, to protect your dishes, your vases and your fragile objects, use old newspapers, blankets, even clothes, rather than buying a roll of bubble wrap.

Choose the right time

Provided you plan well and anticipate, you can easily reduce the cost of your move.

So, it is better to book early enough to avoid paying the high price at the last minute.

Remember to compare quotes carefully, as price differences can be significant from one company to another.

In general, prefer a weekday, if possible outside school holidays, because these periods are the busiest and therefore, those where the prices of the movers are the highest.

If you can, for example, postpone your summer move during the month of September!

Don't forget to check with your company to see if you are entitled to one or two days off for your move.

Get help

Depending on your profile, you may be entitled to relocation assistance, whether public or paid by your company.

Thus, students will be able to benefit from the Loca-Pass advance from Action Logement, while the most modest households will be able, subject to resources, to claim the solidarity fund for housing, allocated by the departmental councils.

Depending on their professional situation, employees may receive a Mobili-pass (company with more than 10 employees), Agri-mobilité (agricultural sector company) or Mobili-jeunes subsidy.

If you are a civil servant, you can benefit from an allowance for change of residence or, for new agents, assistance with the installation of State personnel.

Finally, families with at least three children benefiting from the APL will be able to receive a moving bonus paid by the Family Allowance Fund (CAF).

Opt for a group move

Rather than using a traditional moving company, you can contact carriers, whose rates are significantly lower.

The only difference ?

The space inside the truck is shared with other customers, who are on a similar journey to yours.

This solution is therefore more suitable for small volumes (less than 20 m3 in general), such as students or young single workers, who have relatively little to carry.

Our “MOVING” file

With a B license you can also rent a small truck and carry out the transport yourself, but keep in mind that you will then have to carry everything yourself and the petrol will of course be at your expense.

Finally, be aware that there are collaborative moving platforms between individuals to help you find arms, a van or a driver.
