"Supreme Energy": Dubai succeeded in reducing carbon emissions by 21% during 2021

His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, chaired the 72nd meeting of the Council, which was held remotely, in the presence of the Vice-President of the Council, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer.

The meeting discussed several topics, as the results achieved by the Dubai Strategy to Reduce Carbon Emissions 2030, which aims to reduce carbon emissions by 30% by the end of 2030, in support of the UAE’s efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

The Council announced that Dubai had succeeded in achieving a reduction in carbon emissions for the year 2021, which amounted to 21%, which reflects the effectiveness of programs and projects represented in increasing the area of ​​solar energy projects and raising the operating efficiency in factories and facilities, in addition to recycling operations in the sectors of electricity and water production, industry, land transport and waste treatment. .

The council also discussed the plan proposed by Emirates Gas Company (one of the Emirates National Oil Group companies ENOC) during the coming period to shift from using current gas cylinders to developed cylinders that provide better safety advantages and reduce weight.

Al Tayer said: “During the meeting, we reviewed the roadmap and plans that include national initiatives and strategies to reach climate neutrality and lay the foundations for a low-carbon economy, especially (the strategic national initiative to achieve climate neutrality by 2050), the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the carbon neutrality strategy 2050 for the Emirate of Dubai, to provide 100 % of the production capacity of energy from clean energy sources by 2050 and the Dubai strategy to reduce carbon emissions 2030 and the use of the latest technologies in this field.”

He added: "The development and implementation of existing programs and projects had a positive and tangible impact, reflected in the achieved rates of reduction in carbon emissions over the past ten years, which highlighted the efforts made by the concerned authorities in line with the process of building a sustainable green economy and the state's vision to achieve carbon neutrality."

For his part, Secretary-General of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, Ahmed Butti Al Muhairbi, said, “The current plan to switch to the use of updated cylinders is more effective in ensuring safety for consumers and avoiding risks, as (Emirates Gas) has introduced 9,000 updated cylinders, which has met with the satisfaction and approval of consumers in the emirate. During the past years.”
