The budget is one of the major concerns of students: at the time of gaining independence by accessing, very often, a first accommodation, it is necessary to control one's finances in order to be able to assume the many costs that go hand in hand with this autonomy and the pursuit of higher education... all with generally reduced resources.

And the equation is all the more thorny in these times of inflation.

A suitable accommodation

Housing is the first item of expenditure.

Count about 500 € per month in the region, against not far from 700 € in Île-de-France.

But there are significant disparities depending on the city and the type of dwelling.

The university residences of the Crous (Regional Centers for University and School Works) are a good way to lower the bill with an average price of 450 € in Paris and 350 € in the region, especially since they are close to the places of studies, which saves on transport.

Applications should be submitted between the beginning of May and mid-June on the official portal, for a maximum response in early July.

But beware, there are few chosen ones!

Private student residences can then be a good alternative since they offer competitive prices.

Another option are student and youth hostels that rely on a significant community spirit when arriving in an unfamiliar city.

Finally, furnished studios, flatshares and guest rooms are legion in the private sector, but require extra vigilance.

Remember that your accommodation must allow you to study in good conditions.

Ongoing charges

On average, students pay nearly €350 for food, clothing and to finance their hygiene and cleaning products.

If it is of course possible to reduce the bill by opting for private labels and inexpensive foods, pasta with butter soon becomes boring!

To vary the pleasures at a lower cost, the ideal is to turn to university restaurants which offer complete and balanced menus at 3.30 € (1 € for scholarship holders and students in financial difficulty).

Thanks to anti-waste applications such as Too good to go or Phenix, it is also possible to take advantage of unsold food at a lower cost, while the major retailers offer discounted prices for items close to the expiry date.

On social criteria, you can still benefit from the student solidarity grocery stores set up as part of the Agoraé de la Fage.

On the transport side, you should favor annual subscriptions, knowing that your student card will allow you to access reduced rates for the bus or train, as well as for cinemas and museums.

The European Youth Card (€10) also allows you to take advantage of good cultural plans in France and in the Union.

Tuition expenses

A particularly expensive period, the start of the academic year also rhymes with the payment of tuition fees.

In the public sector, they amount to between 200 and 300 € for registration in a bachelor's or master's cycle, nearly 400 € for a doctorate and more than 600 € for a year of study in engineering training under the supervision of the Ministry of Higher Education.

Our “UNIVERSITY” file

On the other hand, prices rise easily in large public schools and in private establishments, especially in business schools where prices vary between 3,000 and 10,000 € per year.

A single envelope of €92 will also have to be paid before your administrative registration for the student and campus life contribution (CEVC), unless you are on a scholarship.

CAF, region, university… What aid for a student's IT equipment?

Focus: Aid to request

The good news is that many public aids are planned to support the student budget!

At the top of the list, housing allowances from the CAF (Family allowance fund) can cover part of your rent, as can Mobili-jeune aid from Action Logement if you are on a work-study program.

Without being exhaustive, let us also mention the Visale guarantee to benefit from a deposit, the loan guaranteed by the State to finance your studies, mobility assistance for scholarship holders or even assistance with obtaining a driving licence.

Also consider the solidarity complementary health insurance (CSS) to reduce the cost of the doctor and the pharmacy and the "Departure 6:25 pm" program for holidays at a knockdown price.
