China strengthens its energy relationship with Russia in the midst of Putin's order to the West
Spain imported 36,606 GWh of gas
from abroad in the month of
July
to meet its energy needs,
26.8% more
than what it had bought in the same month of the previous year, and
gas purchases from Russia skyrocketed
to the 5,317 GWh that month,
141.3% more
than what was acquired from the Vladimir Putin regime in July 2021.
So far this year, Spain has had to resort to more gas from abroad;
specifically, it has imported
263,300 GWh
in the first seven months of the year,
15.6% more
than in the same period of the previous year, with a much greater weight of
liquefied natural gas that enters by ship
(192,334 GWh, 72.1 % more) compared to natural gas supplied by pipeline (70,866, 38.9% less), due to the break in relations with Algeria.
According to data published this Thursday by
CORES
, Russia has been gaining weight as a gas supplier to Spain, despite our country's commitment, aligned with that of the rest of the European continent, to
break commercial ties with Moscow
and
reduce energy dependence
on the former Soviet country.
In the month of July,
Russia was our fourth largest supplier
, supplying us with
14.5% of the total gas
purchased abroad.
Our first seller that month was
Algeria
with 8,572 GWh of gas, although we must bear in mind that this supply was
47.1% lower
than that registered the same last year: we did not receive a single drop of liquefied natural gas per ship and shipping by gas pipeline was 36.5% lower.
So far this year,
gas sales from Algeria to Spain have fallen by 41.9%
, as a result of the dispute between the two countries after the change in position of the Government of
Pedro Sánchez
regarding the sovereignty of the
Sahara
, which which has forced Spain to resort more to other suppliers such as Russia.
The United States
was our
second seller in July,
with 8,530 GWh, four times more than what was acquired in the same month last year;
followed by
Nigeria
, with 5,882 GWh, eight times more.
23.4
% of the gas purchased in July was from Algeria
;
23.3%, American;
16.1% Nigerian and 14.5% Russian.
Between January and July, the US has been our first supplier, followed by Algeria, Nigeria and Russia.
Until July ,
our country has
exported
34,325.2 GWh of gas, 75.2% more
than in the same period of 2021, especially highlighting the
increase in gas supplied to France
, which has grown by 135.7% after part of its nuclear plants are stopped and it needs energy from abroad.
Sales to
Italy
have also risen, 69.3% so far this year.
The import-export balance leaves a
large deficit
for our country.
Net
imports
(subtraction of both items) totaled
228,875 GWh
in the first seven months of the year,
10
23.4% of the gas purchased in July was from Algeria;
23.3%, American;
16.1% Nigerian and 14.5% Russian.
% higher
than between January and July 2021.
