It is high time that the EU Commission proposed a price cap for Russian pipeline gas.

Europeans have let themselves be fooled by President Vladimir Putin for far too long.

He completely or partially turned off the tap of one country after the other and preferred to burn off the gas.

Nevertheless, thanks to the high gas prices, he was able to continue to fill his war chest.

This is now over - regardless of whether he accepts the price cap or carries out his threat to stop the flow of gas completely.

The EU can react calmly to this.

In the end, what is probably inevitable anyway (Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is right) would only be brought forward.

In addition, the EU has largely decoupled itself from Russian gas in recent months.

The stores are full.

So the proposal comes at the right time.

For consumers, however, the price cap is unlikely to change anything.

Even if Putin swallows it, gas prices should remain high overall.

The EU must find a remedy here in other ways.
