Christian Sewing has been CEO of Deutsche Bank for around four years and is therefore responsible for the bank as a whole.

However, he spent most of his career as a risk manager at the bank, with posts in Germany and abroad.

He was "brought up" as a risk manager, he said at the bank conference.

It is only logical that he is now turning his attention to China.

The problem of dependence on this huge country with its gigantic market potential has been known for a long time.

But it was only through the conflict with Russia that many became aware of what it actually means to reduce dependencies, if not to cut them completely.

As heavy as the energy crisis is currently weighing on Germany, we could already ignore the Russian gas in the winter after next.

But asking companies to avoid China, for example as a sales market for automobiles, could be a completely different challenge.

We have to deal with it now, not in a few years' time, said Sewing, even if he has yet to come up with any concrete solutions.

As a risk manager, however, he knows that his customers' problems can very quickly and inevitably become problems for the accompanying bank.

In the Corona crisis, Sewing coined the phrase that the banks want to be part of the solution in this crisis, not the problem.

It is important to keep this promise over the long term.
