The building sector is a key area in the fight against global warming.

While France aims to divide its greenhouse gas emissions by four by 2050, the noose is gradually tightening around polluting fossil fuels.

As a result, coal, oil and probably gas boilers will soon be a thing of the past...

Exit oil and coal

Polluting, energy-intensive and expensive, oil heating has been in the sights of the authorities for years.

And after a year of postponement, the ban on oil and coal boilers was finally enacted for good through a decree of January 5, 2022.

This text has in fact raised the level of requirements in terms of greenhouse gas emissions from heating appliances by imposing, on July 1, 2022, a strict ceiling of 300 gCO2eq/KWh PCI, which automatically excludes these equipments.

And we are talking here about an almost total ban since these models can now neither be installed in new constructions (housing and professional premises) nor be used to replace a defective boiler in an old building.

However, if you currently heat with oil, don't worry, your device can always be maintained and repaired by a heating specialist, until it is definitely out of order or you decide to replace it. to change.

Moreover, by way of derogation from these new regulations, it will still be possible to install an oil-fired model if no other solution is technically possible (no existing heating or natural gas network).

Gas in sight

If the fate of oil-fired boilers is clear, the proliferation of texts has on the other hand sown confusion concerning the status of gas-fired equipment.

It is necessary to distinguish here two situations: in the new and the old.

Thus, RE 2020, the new building regulations applicable since January 1, 2022, has set a carbon emission threshold of 4 kg CO2eq/m²/year for new individual homes.

However, this ceiling excludes boilers operating exclusively on gas.

The only targets here are therefore houses for which the building permit application was made after this date.

For the time being, new collective and professional buildings are not affected, but should be by 2024 or 2025.

On the side of the old park, on the other hand, no change planned for the moment.

Therefore, you can always freely buy a gas boiler to replace an outdated model.

The only condition: the new device must comply with the greenhouse gas emission ceiling of 300 gCO2eq/KWh PCI which now applies to all new heating equipment or dedicated to the production of hot water, all combined energies.

Aids for changing equipment

Nevertheless, gas and oil represent two of the three most widely used heating methods on a national scale!

Nearly 11 million homes are connected to the natural gas network according to GRDF's 2020 report, while the Center for Economic Studies and Research on Energy (Ceren) has identified some 3.2 million boilers in fuel oil in French homes that year.

To change the situation, the State therefore combines progressive prohibitions with the establishment of financial aid.

While MaPrimeRenov already made it possible to finance the replacement of an oil or gas boiler with a more efficient model, the amount granted has thus been increased by €1,000 and can now peak up to €11,000 (variable according to your level of income ) if you opt for a renewable energy device.

Heat pump, wood-fired boiler or other biomass and thermal solar energy are concerned here, subject to submitting your application by December 31, 2022. You can also combine this boost with energy saving certificates awarded by energy suppliers in the form of bonuses, vouchers or reductions.

Our "HOUSING" file

Please note, on the other hand, if gas boilers with very high energy performance are still subsidized at a minimum, the aid for the purchase of MaPrimeRenov will be abolished on January 1, 2023.
