Four missiles fired by Israeli planes operating from the Mediterranean near the coastal city of Latakia hit Aleppo International Airport on Wednesday evening.

The official Syrian agency Sana confirmed the strikes which, according to it, caused "

material damage

".

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the runway and hangars were hit.

Fires broke out and explosions, which the London-based NGO said were due to Iranian missiles stored on the site, were heard.

An hour later, the Syrian anti-aircraft defense stationed south of Damascus went into action against missiles fired by planes from the desert region to the south-east.

Several projectiles were shot down, reports Sana, but others hit the Kiswa region, where pro-Iranian forces are deployed.

On August 25, a series of Israeli strikes "

among the most violent

" against military positions around Hama, in the center, and Tartous, in the west, left people dead and injured.

In early June, massive raids put the only operational runway at Damascus airport out of service for several days.
