Kuwait: the government calls new legislative elections on September 29

After announcing it during a televised address, the Crown Prince of Kuwait issued a decree this month to dissolve the country's parliament, mired in a serious political crisis.

The legislative elections in Kuwait will take place on 28th September next.

The date is symbolic.

It coincides with the appointment two years ago of Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmed al-Sabah as head of the country.

At the end of June, Crown Prince Sheikh Meshaal al-Ahmad al-Jaber Al-Sabah announced the dissolution of the Assembly resulting from the December 2020 ballot, which had allowed the opposition to obtain almost half of the 50 seats in the hemicycle.

For several years, this small oil emirate in the Gulf has indeed been plunged into a serious crisis between the executive and Parliament.

Five governments have been appointed

in just two years after several controversies.

Persistent tensions that prevent Kuwait from carrying out the necessary reforms in a context of economic difficulties linked to fluctuations in oil prices and the consequences of Covid-19.

The ruling al-Sabah family retains the keys to power, but the deputies, elected in principle for four years, enjoy significant powers.

They do not hesitate to implicate ministers belonging to the royal family accused of mismanagement or even corruption.

In April, the previous cabinet had resigned four months after its formation, while deputies were preparing to question the Prime Minister, Sabah Khaled al-Sabah, on practices deemed “unconstitutional”.
