Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) announced that it has filed a claim for damages worth 47 billion won against the Chosun subcontracting branch of the Korean Federation of Trade Unions (KCTU), which has been on strike for 51 days, demanding an increase in wages.

The subject of litigation was limited to the executive branch, not the entire union.

Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering explained that in order to prevent the recurrence of illegal occupation and strikes in the future, and to build constructive labor-management relations, strikers outside the executive branch were excluded from civil damages lawsuits.

However, he added that he plans to proceed with prosecution for criminal responsibility depending on the degree of participation.

Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) said that it calculated the amount of lawsuits by first specifying the expenses that the company had to spend unnecessarily during the illegal occupation period.

A Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering official said, "We plan to review whether or not to include the parts that are not calculated in this lawsuit in consideration of the outcome of the lawsuit, the possibility of winning, and the possibility of recovering the amount of damage at the time when the amount of damage can be calculated later."

The subcontractor union went on strike on June 2nd and occupied the first dock of the Okpo Shipyard, and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering suffered a situation in which launching work was suspended for the first time since its inception.

On the 22nd of last month, the 51-day strike ended with an agreement between the Partners Council and the subcontractor branch, but Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering announced that it would file a claim for damages against the subcontractor union, saying that it suffered 800 billion won in damages due to the suspension of launching.
