• Economy Volkswagen will be able to start building its gigafactory at the end of the year after expropriating the Generalitat 1,000 plots

  • Motor The Volkswagen and Seat battery factory will be in Sagunto

A boost for the Valencian industry with a tractor effect, the generation of 3,000 jobs and the investment of 2,500 million euros are some of the arguments with which the president of the Valencian Community,

Ximo Puig

, has described the importance of

Volkswagen-Seat

chose the Valencian town of Sagunto to install its gigafactory to produce electric batteries.

The entire Government, of which

Compromís

and

Podemos

are also part , joined forces to meet the hundreds of requirements of the German company, among which its president,

Thomas Schmall

, recognized that the administrative facilities were in place to start construction in 2023 so that production could begin in 2026. However, in just five months complications have arisen.

20% of the energy consumed by the plant will be green and will be generated by a 250-hectare photovoltaic macro-plant in which

Iberdrola

will invest 500 million, as reflected last July in the agreement for the development of the works that it signed the Generalitat and Volkswagen, against which Compromís voices have now been raised.

Specifically, that of the mayor of Valencia,

Joan Ribó

, and the former mayor of Sagunto,

Quico Fernández

, who holds the powers of Urban Planning in the Governing Board chaired by the socialist

Darío Moreno

.

Both denounce the "environmental impact" that the macro-installation will have and appeal to the search for solutions to be able to, at least, fragment it.

"The gigafactory and the photovoltaic plant have to be carried out in a responsible, sustainable and respectful way with the environment and agriculture in Sagunto. You have to think about the farmers and you cannot ignore the interests, the processes have to be cautious," assured Ribó despite the fact that the Ministry of Ecological Transition, led by the also nationalist

Mireia Mollá

, unhesitatingly granted the strategic environmental and territorial declaration (DATE) for the land expropriated by the Generalitat of the so-called

Parc Sagunt II

where the German company will be installed.

The Department of Urbanism insists on the impact that it will have on the municipality of Sagunto, with a lot of land already compromised in infrastructure, the loss of land "with a very high agrological capacity and also with a landscape impact", for which it insists on negotiating the division of the plant into "three or four" and demands environmental compensation from the Generalitat for the "disappearance of hundreds of thousands of trees".

The Generalitat has already been collecting land to make it available to the multinational, but the delimitation of the auxiliary plants is not defined, so the councilor, through a statement, advised the farmers in the area, in his mostly orange growers, who "don't sell their property".

"Do not make transactions, since the surfaces that are going to be affected have not yet been defined. We want to avoid speculative processes, because in the current market the price is much lower than what would be desirable and there are those who want to take advantage of the expropriations, which They are priced significantly higher.

Mazón (PP): "They have to stop putting sticks in the wheels"

In the PSOE, the voices of some of its partners have not been liked after a year of tough negotiations to attract an investment pursued by other autonomies and that has been the best valued by Industry, granting it 167.32 million from the Strategic Project for recovery and transformation (Perte) of the electric and connected vehicle (VEC).

"There is no risk with the gigafactory," they say.

The opposition parties do see it, aware that investors do not like noise.

The president of the PP,

Carlos Mazón

, described as "regrettable" that from Compromís "they come out with the idea that the project must be cut up."

"They have to stop putting sticks in the wheels of fundamental business decisions for our land, such as the Volkswagen project, which will bring investment, employment, stability and prestige."
