• During a trip abroad, it is quite possible to be confronted with bank charges during a transaction by credit card or a withdrawal.

  • However, it is possible to limit the note to the maximum.

  • Bank cards that limit costs, subscription to options with your bank, anticipate before leaving... "20 Minutes" shares its advice with you.

The clothes are ready to be put away in the suitcase, the sun creams are bought, the holiday program is ready.

But has the budget been set?

When traveling abroad, it is important to be aware of any bank charges that could be added to all the others during your stay.

However, thanks to a few tips, it is possible to limit the note.

20 Minutes

shares them with you.

Opt for the free bank card

Would you like to get a card that allows you to withdraw and pay free of charge, wherever you are?

This is what online banking N26 and payment institutions Wise and Revolut offer.

"With Wise, you can withdraw and pay free of charge since you can hold money in the currency of your choice," says Matthieu Robin, financial sector project manager at UFC-Que Choisir.

Do we therefore have to change banks?

The answer is no.

And if you don't want to choose this option, Matthieu Robin advises “don't hesitate to see the tariff brochures of several banks”, and, why not, to open “a supplementary account with another service provider”.

Subscribe to an option with your bank

Some banks offer paid options that allow you to withdraw and pay at lower cost without changing your bank card.

Depending on the package chosen, payments and withdrawals are limited or unlimited, anywhere in the world.

Several banks offer these options, such as LCL, BNP Paribas, or Société Générale.

Withdraw from distributors of partner banks of yours

On the cash side, fees may also be expected.

In theory, ATM withdrawals do not incur any fees if you are in the Eurozone.

In practice, some may still charge commission fees of around 2.50 euros.

However, it is still possible to withdraw free of charge in the euro zone if you go to an ATM of a partner bank of yours.

To find out about them,

20 Minutes

invites you to visit your bank's website.

On the other hand, if you are located outside the euro zone, be aware that most banks will charge “around 2.5% fixed costs and 2% exchange costs”, specifies Matthieu Robin.

Anticipate before the stay

“In exchange offices abroad, 1 or 2% currency conversion fees are retained,” warns Matthieu Robin.

Even if this is also the case in France, the latter are less.

You are therefore strongly advised to change your currencies before leaving.

Same thing for withdrawals: as far as is reasonable, remember to leave with a certain amount of cash, especially if you are traveling outside the euro zone.
