The data on international tourist arrivals for the month of June anticipate that this will be a summer much closer to that of before the health crisis broke out, both in terms of visits and spending.

In June, the month that begins the high tourist season, Spain received 7.5 million

international tourists, 236.6% more than in the same month of 2021, when 2.2 million arrived, and very close to the more than eight million in 2019.

Until June we received 30.2 million

foreign tourists, compared to 5.4 million received a year earlier and already close to 38.2 million in 2019. Spending stood at 35,769 million, 90% that of 2019 ( 40 billion).

This is shown by the surveys of Tourist Movements in Borders (Frontur) and Tourist Expenditure (Egatur) published this Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

As for spending, only in the month of June it reached 8,993 million, 271.3% more than the same month of 2021, when it was 2,422 million.

The average expenditure per tourist stood at 1,205 euros

, with an annual increase of 10.3%, and the average daily expenditure grew by 18.6%, to 174 euros.

Recovery

"The data shows that, despite the context of international uncertainty, Spain maintains its competitiveness and a good rate of recovery and continues to be the preferred destination of millions of tourists", said Reyes Maroto, Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism.

The main sending countries in the first half of 2022

were the United Kingdom

(with about 6.5 million tourists and an annual increase of 2,253.5%), Germany (with almost 4.4 million, and an increase of 272.4 %) and France (with more than 3.9 million, 232.8% more).

Germany and France are the following countries with the most tourists visiting Spain.

Germany contributed 1.1 million (125.8% more in annual rate) and France 865,973 (97.4% more).

As for the autonomous communities to which tourists arrived,

the Balearic Islands was the first main destination for visitors in June

, with 26.3% of the total.

It was followed by Catalonia (21.6%) and Andalusia (13.5%).

Almost two million arrived in the Balearic Islands, 198.5% more than in June 2021.

The main issuing countries in terms of the level of spending in June were the United Kingdom (with 21.6% of the total), Germany (13.8%) and France (7.1%).

The expenditure of tourists residing in the United Kingdom increased by 1,183.9% in the annual rate, that of those from Germany did so by 124.3% and that of those from France rose by 110.1%.
