The US Congress has passed a comprehensive bill to promote semiconductor manufacturing in the US.

The House of Representatives voted 243 to 187 in favor of the chip bill on Thursday.

The Senate had previously voted in favor of the draft.

It provides subsidies for the industry in the USA in the billions.

The declared goal of US President Joe Biden is to strengthen competitiveness vis-à-vis China and other countries.

The law will lower prices, create jobs "and - most importantly - reduce our dependence on imported chips," Biden had previously said.

A White House representative said it was one of the most important steps to encourage US innovation.

The law is also about reducing dependence on chip production in Asia.

Large manufacturing capacities are located in Taiwan in particular.

In view of the tensions with China, US politicians are concerned about security of supply.

Semiconductors are considered to be the pacesetters of the modern technology world and can be found almost everywhere today, for example in smartphones, computers, cars or medical devices.

A shortage of semiconductors had led to price increases and supply chain problems in many industries during the corona pandemic.

The effects are still being felt.
