This coming weekend, from July 22nd to 24th, Frankfurt Airport will face the toughest test of the year so far.
While there have already been a number of delays and suitcase chaos due to a lack of staff, up to 200,000 passengers a day are expected at Germany's largest airport at the beginning of the summer school holidays in Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland.
There have never been so many since the beginning of the corona pandemic.
In coordination with the main customer Lufthansa, the operator Fraport has significantly reduced capacity to 88 take-offs and landings per hour.
A few weeks ago, peaks of up to 106 flight movements per hour were allowed.
According to Fraport spokesman Jürgen Harrer, operations have stabilized significantly with the measure.
The mountain of suitcases was reduced from around 5,000 to 2,000 pieces of luggage.
They have to be sent after the owners.
So far, Lufthansa in Frankfurt and Munich alone has canceled almost 6,000 flights for the months of July and August.
Fraport wants to oblige other companies to cancel individual flights or at least to postpone them to weaker times.
