• According to Bruno Aïm, president of the National Confederation of Glaciers of France, the price of a scoop of ice cream could increase by around 50 cents.

  • The reason: the rise in the price of raw materials and energy, which weighs heavily on the cash flow of ice cream makers.

  • Several glaciers have however confided to

    20 Minutes

that they have not increased their prices for this season.

They are almost as essential as a towel and a bathing suit to enjoy the seaside in the middle of summer.

They are ice cream.

As a snack, for dessert… A little summer pleasure to which many of us succumb.

But they may only have small pleasure, because due to inflation, their price, like many other foods, is likely to rise.

Is this really the case?

Is it the same everywhere?

In supermarkets, in restaurants, at ice cream parlors by the sea?

Invoice amounts are increasing

For all sellers and resellers of ice cream, the observation is the same: the price of raw materials has soared.

“In March, the kilo of red fruits went from 2.50 to 9 euros, and we no longer buy them fresh but frozen.

The eggs also took 6%, the cream 8%, and we pay between 20 and 30 centimes more per kilo for sugar", according to Bruno Aïm, president of the National Confederation of Glaciers of France and manager of the factory of sorbets and sorbet ice cream from Saint-Mandé, which supplies the restaurants.

Energy also comes at a high price, because cold rooms and freezers are very greedy in terms of electricity.

"We pay 1,000 euros more per month," he says.

Cardboard boxes, packaging, spoons… It's the same thing for supplies.

“The plastic bins in which we put ice cream have increased by 7% since March/April,” adds Bruno Aïm.

A price increase...

The French are starting to get used to it: food prices have soared in recent months.

And ice cream would be no exception.

"By the sea, a ball that cost 2.50 euros a year ago will be difficult to find for less than 3 euros", announces the president of the confederation.

Let's go to Arcachon, to the Maison du Glacier Moulleau.

“Each start of the year, our supplier increases its prices by 1.9%, explains Carmen Porée, the manager of the establishment.

But last April, he increased them again, this time by 7%.

But it will not raise its prices any further.

“I had already increased the single ball by 10 cents, and the double by 20 cents.

I can not do any more ".

… But not everywhere

At other glaciers, we don't want to touch the wallets of holidaymakers.

This is particularly the case at Glaces Bargeton, in Saint-Jean-de-Luz.

Mathieu Bargeton, its manager, assures that he has not increased his prices.

"We remain on a ball at 3 euros, 5 euros for two, 7 euros for three".

This trader manages to limit the effects of inflation.

"We make our ice cream on site with raw products that we transform ourselves, so we escape certain increases", explains the glacier.

"But we are waiting for the end of the season to take stock, and I do not rule out that we are forced to adjust prices," he admits.

As for supermarkets, prices should increase by an average of 5%, according to the IRI barometer.

With differences depending on the brand, because not all suppliers are increasing their price list.

"We know that the purchasing power of the French is declining, and we don't want them to deprive themselves of buying ice cream because its price is too high," says Christophe Barbier, president of the Fabrique du South.
