While protecting biodiversity has become an international issue, efforts to conserve nature are expanding among companies.

Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Co., Ltd., a major non-life insurance company, started a service last month to cover the cost of restoration work performed by ship operators in the event of marine pollution caused by oil spills caused by a ship accident.

According to the company, the insurance so far has covered compensation for damages caused by marine pollution, but it does not cover restoration work such as oil recovery voluntarily performed by the business operator.

In addition, after a forest fire broke out, the cost burden was large and tree planting did not proceed, but insurance was also applied to a part of the cost.

Yohei Sekiguchi, Head of the Sustainability Promotion Team at Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance, said, "We would like to help raise the awareness of customers such as companies in order to protect biodiversity."

In addition, Kao, a manufacturer of daily necessities, is promoting efforts to manage farms in Indonesia and other countries without destroying forests, over the procurement of palm oil, which is a raw material for detergents and the like.
