Two bankers said that banks cannot stop the transfer or payments made by the customer to any party as long as he enters the password (one time), known as “OTP” that is sent to the customer’s phone and is valid for a few minutes, stressing that the customer entering “OTP” means an additional confirmation of his approval of the payment process, so that it is not possible to stop deducting the amount from his account most of the time, because the transfer is at the same moment, except for those transfers that pass through the “Swift” system and the central bank portal, which have specific working hours .

They pointed out that the exposure of some customers to hacking their bank accounts and withdrawing balances from them is due to the customer’s response to the anonymous links that are often sent to him via e-mail or through “WhatsApp”.

They emphasized that the customer's contacting the customer service center and requesting to stop the transfer is not useful in the cases in which the transfer takes place "at the same moment."

Bank dealers confirmed to "Emirates Today" that they had been hacked into their bank balances with large sums, after setting the password sent by the bank to pay a small amount.

scam messages

For her part, the banking expert, Awatef Al-Harmoudi, said that “the customer’s response to fraudulent messages that he receives via e-mail is the common reason for hacking the bank account;

Where the mail is already hacked, and it has become common, the parties that the customer sends and have transactions with, where the logo and name of this party is used to trap the customer, where he is asked to put his bank card details, and then hackers modify the amount sent without the customer’s knowledge, so when sending the bank One-time password to confirm the payment, and the specified amount is withdrawn by the scammers.

Payments

Al-Harmoudi indicated that “some transfers and payments are made immediately, as soon as the customer enters the password (OTP) sent to him on his registered phone, and this is common, even if the customer takes the initiative to contact the customer service center and report fraud, the transfer cannot be stopped or Retrieve it,” indicating that “some transfers can be stopped due to the delay in their implementation as a result of their passage through the (SWIFT) system, and through the central bank system, due to the limitation of working hours, but this is only done in large financial transfers and these hackers do not usually do, but withdraw small amounts , sequentially.

And she stressed that “the customer entering the one-time password (OTP), means an additional confirmation of his approval of the payment process, so the banks implement immediately, and here customers must pay close attention, and carefully review all the messages that they receive, and do not put their bank data until after Confirm the nature of these messages, and whether they are real or fraud.

Customer ID

In turn, the banking expert, Ibrahim Ali, said that “the banks are setting several stages to verify the identity of the customer by asking him, upon electronic payment, to put his password, as a first step, and then a one-time password (OTP) is sent to his registered phone, Valid for use for a few minutes, and if the customer enters it, this means his full approval of the payment, and the bank will implement it, according to the applicable system, and according to the central bank system.”

And he indicated that “sometimes, the customer’s phone or e-mail is compromised, which exposes him to stealing all his data and exploiting them to withdraw his bank balances, and here the matter turns into a criminal crack, requiring the customer to resort to the police, and the banks do not bear any responsibility in returning the transferred sums, as a result of the breach ».
