For a long time, the high-end car market has been basically dominated by traditional luxury brands such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi (hereinafter referred to as BBA), and even if the traditional fuel vehicles of self-owned brands are more cost-effective, it is still difficult to compete with joint venture brands.

However, the current development of new energy vehicles has given independent brands the opportunity to overtake in corners.

According to data recently released by the Passenger Federation, the retail sales of new energy passenger vehicles in my country in June reached 532,000 units, a year-on-year increase of 130.8%, and the market penetration rate reached 27.4%.

The Federation of Passenger Transport Associations pointed out that pure electric vehicles performed well in June, with wholesale sales of 452,000 units, a year-on-year increase of 131.1%.

The sales of high-end models of electric vehicles of self-owned brands have also grown strongly. After steadily occupying the low-end market, they compete with traditional luxury brands in the high-end new energy vehicle market.

The sales data of pure electric vehicles in June shows that in many market segments, independent brands continue to dominate.

Self-owned brand sits firmly on the head

  Redefining premium car values

In recent years, the independent brands of new energy vehicles have continued to exert their strength and gradually gained an advantage in the high-end market.

On the sales list of pure electric vehicles over 400,000 yuan in June this year, Weilai ET7, Weilai SE8, Hongqi E-HS9, and Gaohe HiPhi X accounted for 4,349 units, 1,684 units, 601 units, and 535 units of sales respectively. The top four seats accounted for 85.76% of the total sales, and Weilai alone accounted for 71.3%.

Although the remaining 6 models on the list are all foreign brands, the pure electric vehicles of independent brands occupy an absolute advantage in sales in this price range.

In the price range of 300,000 to 400,000 yuan, Tesla Model Y, Weilai ES6, and BMW X3 BEV ranked in the top three with sales of 52,150 units, 5,100 units, and 2,025 units, respectively.

Weilai EC6 ranked fourth in the sales rankings with 1,828 units, and Lantu FREE pure electric ranked eighth with 209 units.

It can be seen that although Tesla Model Y has opened a huge gap with other models by itself, the high-end domestic new energy vehicle brands can already compete with traditional international luxury cars.

Liu Hao, an independent automotive analyst, pointed out to the Red Star Capital Bureau that the reason why independent brands can beat BBA in the high-end new energy vehicle market is because they have reshaped consumers' requirements for high-end new energy vehicles.

"The sense of technology and intelligent technology are the main reference factors for Chinese consumers. Looking at all the models launched by the new car-making forces, both appearance and intelligent driving experience cater to this demand."

  BYD challenges Tesla

  Rivals in the mid-market

200,000-300,000 yuan is the most competitive range for car companies.

In this pure electric vehicle segment, foreign brands are on par with their own brands, but domestic brands are speeding up to grab market share.

In the June 200,000-300,000 pure electric vehicle sales list, Tesla Model 3 firmly occupied the top spot with 25,800 units, 1.01 times higher than the second-ranked BYD Han EV.

However, the performance of BYD Han EV was also very impressive, with sales exceeding 12,800 units in June.

On May 18, BYD disclosed data showing that the cumulative sales volume of the "Han Family" exceeded 200,000 units, becoming the first self-owned brand sedan to achieve a "price of 200,000+ and sales of 200,000+".

In addition, BYD also launched the Denza brand this year. The first new car D9 just released is positioned as an MPV. The pre-sale price is 335,000-460,000, which is BYD's current price ceiling.

In terms of sales volume alone, in the first half of this year, BYD has become a competitor to Tesla.

  Compete with multinational high-end brands

Self-owned brands focus on "new high-end cars"

For the new energy vehicle market in the second half of this year, industry insiders generally give good expectations.

Cui Dongshu, secretary general of the Passenger Federation, pointed out that the recent rapid development of China's electric vehicle market presents a new situation of rapid rise with independent brands as the core, especially the entire high-end electric vehicle brands represented by independent brands such as NIO are developing rapidly.

In this regard, Cui Dongshu proposed the concept of "new high-end car".

In his view, traditional high-end vehicles are still mainly in the field of fuel vehicles. Although multinational brands have a century-old brand accumulation and foundation, they have not been recognized by consumers in the new energy vehicle market. Instead, domestic high-end new energy vehicles are the main ones. Self-owned brands have been accepted by the market and become "new high-end brands".

Zhu Huarong, chairman of Changan Automobile, once said that high-end self-owned brands are not a new topic, but high-end is an inevitable choice for self-owned brands.

Liu Hao, an independent auto analyst, believes that whether China's high-end new energy vehicle brands can compete with multinational high-end brands is the key to whether China can become an automobile power.

"Domestic brands have gained a first-mover advantage in electrification, but a temporary lead doesn't mean anything. A giant like BBA really works with amazing energy." Liu Hao pointed out, "This new energy vehicle race has just begun."
