The summer sales started more than two weeks ago and for the moment, the first results are more than mixed.

According to the Trade Alliance, there were nearly 20% fewer sales in stores compared to 2019. In question: inflation, the decline in purchasing power, but also competition from the Internet, where sales explode.

For those who are on vacation, it may also be an opportunity to go shopping.

It's been more than two weeks since the summer sales started and halfway through.

We are also on red alert.

According to the Commerce Alliance, there were nearly 20% fewer in-store sales compared to 2019.

Internet competition

The French buy a lot more on the Internet where sales are exploding.

An increase that does not compensate for the losses in store.

And if this beginning of sales is a failure, it is also because of inflation which slows down purchases.

"We know that in times of inflation, when the French have to make consumer choices, unfortunately, they are often unfavorable to non-food purchases and in particular to the clothing sector", notes Yohann Petiot, general manager of the Trade Alliance.

One sector, however, is doing well. Signs that offer low prices, such as Boutique Stock, a store in Paris specializing in discount clothing.

"Since the start of the sales, I have noticed that there are a lot more people compared to other years. Customers have jumped on the clothes and there, at this time, they really want to have fun" , notes Sara, the manager.

And according to professionals, the remaining ten days will not be enough to reverse the trend.
