The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy, Abdullah Al Saleh, said that the ministry completed the registration of 750 certificates for intellectual works for institutions and individuals during the first five months of 2022, with a growth rate of 57% compared to the same period in 2021.

He added, during a media briefing held by the ministry at its headquarters in Dubai yesterday, on the executive regulations of the copyright and related rights law on intellectual property, that in cooperation with the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, 31 websites that infringe copyright and intellectual property have been blocked since the beginning of 2022, while the ministry organized 16 workshops since the beginning of the year, with the aim of raising community awareness about the importance of intellectual property rights.

He explained that the UAE has witnessed successive developments during the last period regarding legislation and laws related to the protection of intellectual property, including intellectual works, and legislation to protect copyright and neighboring rights.

Al Saleh stressed that the Copyright Law constitutes a new pivotal step in the development of the system for protecting intellectual works, as it sets general principles for the protection of copyright and related rights, and provides an environment conducive to the growth and prosperity of authorship and classification in various sectors.

He pointed out that the executive regulations of the law represent a continuation of the distinguished legislative system for the protection of intellectual property in the country with regard to intellectual works, by providing integrated and clear mechanisms and procedures for implementing the provisions of the law, achieving its objectives and enhancing its impact on the innovation environment in the country, and in the prosperity of the economy and society.

He added that the regulation is in line with the country's obligations within the framework of its membership in the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), including the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works, and the WIPO Treaty on Performance and Sound Recording, which will enhance the position of the UAE and raise its competitive indicators regionally and globally in the areas related to authoring activities. and creativity.

He stated that the executive regulations of the law set a set of rules for registering intellectual works, including data and ownership of the work, the author's data, the data of importers and distributors of works, in addition to the conditions for obtaining a collective management license, the conditions for granting a compulsory license to copy or translate materials for the author, and the mechanisms followed in Customs release and other provisions.

And he indicated that the regulation established the necessity of registering in the register of importers and distributors of works, the names of importers and distributors, their rights to import or distribute works in the country, and data about their activities and the authorities that authorized them to import or distribute works.

It also permitted the grievance before the Grievance Committee against the rejection decision within 30 days from the date of notifying the person of this.
