The First Vice President and Minister of Economic Affairs,
Nadia Calviño
, boasted this Tuesday in the plenary session held in the Senate that
the measures approved by the Government
to mitigate the impact of the war in Ukraine on prices
"are lowering inflation between 2 and 3 points.
"From the Government we have been putting measures that have been effective, they are lowering inflation between 2 and 3 points, they are
placing inflation in Spain below the average of the European Union,
there are eleven countries in the euro zone that have an inflation higher than that of Spain", he said during his speech at the Senate control session.
This means that, according to his calculations, if the Executive had not approved measures such as tax cuts on electricity, the CPI would have risen
11.7%
in May , not 8.7% as certified by the INE.
However, this institute publishes the
CPI at constant taxes
on a monthly basis , which precisely reflects the behavior that inflation would have had in the absence of measures, and in
May
it rose by
9.6%
, that is, the measures applied have alleviated the rise in prices in nine tenths.
With regard to the comparison of inflation in Spain with respect to other countries, it is true that eleven European countries outperform our country in the ranking, but
none of the large economies in the euro zone registers more pronounced increases than ours
.
In
Germany
, the CPI rose 8.7% in May, as in Spain;
in
France
, 5.8%;
and in
Italy
, 7.3%.
"We are going to continue in this direction
," said the vice president, who has asked the PP for its support for the decree law that the Government plans to approve
this Saturday in the extraordinary Council of Ministers
to extend and expand some of the measures that have been in force since on April 1, such as the discount on fuel.
Calviño trusts that the PP will support the Government this time "defending the public interest of all Spaniards."
His claim has been made in response to the PP senator
Javier Maroto,
who has asked him "to take the problem of inflation seriously" and to adopt concrete and courageous measures, with deflating the personal income tax rate or reducing the VAT on the electricity bill.
