His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, President of Dubai Airports, Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of Emirates Airline Group, yesterday morning, visited the northern runway at Dubai International Airport, during which he was briefed on the progress of work on a rehabilitation project. The runway is scheduled to open to receive air traffic on the 22nd of this month, according to the approved schedule for the project.

His Highness listened to an explanation of the runway rehabilitation program within a tight time frame of 45 days, with remarkable progress in completing the project according to the best international standards by various work teams led by national expertise and competencies at Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects, the leading engineering organization responsible for Master planning, design, infrastructure development and construction of Dubai's vital aviation sector.

His Highness praised the exceptional efforts behind the completion of the project on time, and His Highness said: “We are pleased to complete the second project to rehabilitate the northern runway, in an important step that reinforces our permanent endeavors to enable and meet the continuous growth of passenger traffic, and then support the growth of the air transport industry in Dubai, which is keen to provide the best levels of service for all travelers, and ensuring the flexibility of the airport infrastructure by adopting and operating the latest technologies.”

His Highness added: "Our expectations are positive for the current year, with growing estimates of the annual passenger flow, which we expect to reach 58.3 million passengers by the end of 2022, which exceeds the initial expectations by a large margin."

The project team, which includes more than 400 engineers and field experts, and more than 3,800 workers per day, was able to complete the huge project within the specified time, as the Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects Corporation appointed the national company, Al Naboodah Contracting, to implement all infrastructure works for a rehabilitation program North Runway due to its extensive experience in airport construction and long-term cooperation relationship with Dubai International Airport projects.

The northern runway at Dubai International Airport underwent a major rehabilitation process in 2014, followed by the rehabilitation of the southern runway in 2019, which included updating the technologies used in the runway as part of a periodic maintenance program to ensure flexibility and continuity of movement at the airport around the clock.

With the end of the life of the runway floor approaching, and while airport traffic is witnessing signs of a strong recovery, the decision was taken to rehabilitate the northern runway in order to support the airport's operations and not to affect the future operation of the airport over the next 10 years.

The rehabilitation work included a complete 4,500-meter reconstruction of the central section of the runway and all taxiways and safety tracks associated with the runway.

More than 295,000 tons of special asphalt and 125,000 tons of concrete have been placed on site since the start of works so far.

It also rehabilitated and installed more than 4,230 LED lights for the airport runway lighting system (AFL), in addition to installing the latest technologies in the navigational support systems and meteorological devices to ensure safety and increase the operational capacity of the runway.

The concerned teams had begun coordinating detailed requirements, assessing the status of the northern runway, preparing designs, plans and logistical plans for construction and phased implementation more than a year before the start of the project, in close cooperation with the main authorities and strategic partners at the airport, local authorities, the contractor and the engineering consultant for the project.

The project to rehabilitate the northern runway at Dubai International Airport is expected to contribute to supporting the continuous growth of air traffic within the airport campus during the next phase, and in a manner that enhances the steady growth of passenger traffic through the emirate’s airports, which constitutes a primary goal within the framework of the approach aimed at consolidating Dubai’s position as the best city to live and work And visit in the world, and confirm its position as a global tourist destination and a major center for logistics services in the world.
